Top 10 Most Endangered Species List Update

10 most endangered species

It was very difficult to find an accurate top 10 endangered species list. Not only was the information rather varied in its selection, but I also found the subject to be rather emotional.

Some of the species included in the lists are down to a mere handful of animals. The lists do not include insects at this stage.

I was really impressed to find an array of people out there doing their best to try and help these endangered species by spreading information and also trying to raise money for breeding programs.

I have compiled two most endangered species lists and they are as follows:

According to the World Wildlife Federation (WWF) the top 10 most endangered species are:

1. Black Rhino

2. Giant Panda

3. Tiger

4. Beluga Sturgeon

5. Goldenseal

6. Alligator Snapping Turtle

7. Hawksbill Turtle

8. Big Leaf Mahogany

9. Green-Cheeked Parrot

10. Mako Shark

According to another list compiled by All About Wildlife, these are the top 10 endangered  animals.

1. Ivory-Billed Woodpecker

A North American bird so endangered it may actually be extinct

2. Amur Leopard

The world’s rarest cat: Only 40 left in Russia’s Far East

3. Javan Rhinoceros

No more than 60 of these swamp-dwelling Asian rhinos exist

4. Greater Bamboo Lemur

Here’s the scarcest of Madagascar’s fast-dwindling lemur species

5. Northern Right Whale

Hunted to near extinction, 350 right whales still swim the Atlantic

6. Western Lowland Gorilla

Disease and illegal hunting are taking an alarming toll on this gentle giant of a primate

7. Leatherback Sea Turtle

The population of the world’s largest turtle is dropping at an alarming rate

8. Siberian (or Amur) Tiger

The world’s biggest cat weighs as much as 300 kilos (660 pounds)

9. Chinese Giant Salamander

Humans are eating the world’s largest amphibian into extinction

10. Kakapo Parrot

So few of these flightless parrots remain that the survivors all have names

According to the following Youtube clip these are the 20 most endangered species.

When we as a species continue to destroy the habitat of animals, we place further pressure on the dwindling numbers of endangered species.

The bio-diversity of the planet is at an all time low, yet it is estimated (on average by country) that there are 3 chickens, 0.3 pigs and 1 cow per person on the planet.

The meat industry decimates 1000’s of hectares daily to create new grazing areas and breeding pens to “meat” the demand for their products. As a species humans are consuming more animals and are reliant on the products produced by the slaughter of animals than ever before.

In the future a wildlife experience may consist of virtual animals and 3D models of creatures that used to roam the planet in freedom.

What are your thoughts on endangered species, have you any animals that should be added to the list?

Should we start massive government funded breeding programs to preserve the endangered species of our planet?

Should more wildlife reserves be set aside to provided protection for animals?
